But in the end, according to what Eli Beracha, co-author of “Lessons from Over 30 Years of Buy versus Rent Decisions: Is the American Dream Always Wise?” told Amy Hoak of the Wall Street Journal, “We find that if people don’t invest the money [that they save by renting], actually about 90% of the time, you’re better off buying.”

So instead of thinking of a home as an investment, perhaps we should start referring to it as a forced savings plan.
